Is your mindset keeping you broke? Would you believe me if I told you you could make a few changes to your mindset and improve your finances?
It’s true!!!
Most people think external circumstances like the economy or where they live are holding them back, but actually, it’s their mindset.
A poverty or scarcity mindset will keep you focused on lack and fear.
On the other hand, an abundance mindset opens the door to opportunities, growth, and wealth.
Sometimes you may not even realize some of the things you think and do are coming from a poverty mindset.
Here are some signs you’re in a poverty or scarcity mindset:
- You constantly worry about money. You hyper-fixate and stress about money, even when things are stable.
- You believe that money is scarce: You think there’s never enough money to go around. That there’s a limited amount of money in the world and that if someone else has more, you’re going to have less.
- You have a fear of spending: You’re overly cautious about spending, even on necessities. Or you’re a penny pincher. You clip coupons to save 50 cents or travel an extra 5 miles to save a few cents on gas. I absolutely struggled with this and sometimes still have to pull myself out of this mindset because I liked the challenge of being poor, which sounds weird to say. I liked to see how far I could stretch my money. I eventually realized that my love of this challenge was actually keeping me poor.
- You’re focused on lack: You constantly focus on what you don’t have instead of focusing on and being grateful for what you do have.
- You choose not to invest in yourself: You avoid spending money on education, personal growth, or new opportunities. Even if these things will help get you out of poverty.
- You refuse to use your nice or new things: You don’t believe you’ll be able to replace them if they get used up or worn out.
- Hoarding tendencies: You save everything out of fear of not having enough in the future.
- You live paycheck to paycheck: You struggle to save and barely get by each month.
- You compare yourself to others: You compare your financial situation to other people and maybe feel jealous or resentful.
- You have a fear of taking risks: You’re afraid to take financial risks, even if the potential reward could be a huge boost to your income.
- You believe that money is evil: You think that wealthy people are greedy, selfish, or dishonest.
- You settle: You accept less than you deserve because you believe that’s all you can get or all you’re worthy of.
- You don’t dream big: You avoid setting big financial goals because you don’t believe they’re possible for someone like you.
- You focus on immediate gratification: You prioritize short-term pleasures over long-term financial stability.
- You avoid financial planning: You avoid making a budget or a long-term plan for your money because it feels too overwhelming or you just don’t want to think about finances.
- You’re afraid of success: You’re afraid that success might be too hard, bring on more problems, or that you won’t be able to handle it. Some people also think they’ll lose relationships if they become successful.
- You have low self-worth: You don’t believe you’re worthy of financial abundance. You believe that only certain people can be wealthy, and you’re just not one of them.
- You blame external circumstances: You often blame your financial situation on external factors like the economy, rather than taking personal responsibility.
- You believe that hard work is the only way to get rich: You think wealth only comes from effort and sacrifice, not from smart decisions or opportunities. I mean, many of us were told, money doesn’t grow on trees! You have to work hard for it!

Alright, here are 19 ways to get out of a poverty mindset and flip it around into an abundance mindset:
- Practice gratitude daily: Focus on the good things you already have to shift your attention from lack to abundance.
- Get comfortable with money. Get comfortable with how to behave with money and how to receive money. Surprisingly a lot of people aren’t comfortable receiving money, which is keeping them broke. Think about it, have you ever had a time when someone tried to pay you back or give you money for something and you said….”nah, it’s okay. I got it.” Get comfortable with receiving money in all amounts. This lets the Universe know you’re open to receiving more!
- Reframe negative beliefs: Challenge your limiting beliefs about money and replace them with positive affirmations. List all your feelings about money, maybe taking from some of the examples above. Then on another list, change all those negative beliefs into the complete opposite. Repeat the positive list every day, multiple times a day until you’ve reprogrammed your subconscious mind.
- Act as if you’re wealthy: I have a video on how to do this here!
- Visualize abundance: Imagine yourself living in financial abundance. Open up your banking app. Make a mental note of what it looks like. Then visualize the balance increasing and increasing and increasing. Visualize yourself having nice things, wearing nice clothes, and driving a nice car.
- Educate yourself about money: Learn about personal finance, investing, and wealth-building strategies to empower yourself. Immerse yourself in wealth knowledge. Read all the books, listen to all the podcasts, and watch all the YouTube videos. Get comfortable thinking and talking about money.
- Surround yourself with positive influences: Spend time with people who have a healthy, abundant mindset toward money and success.
- Take small, positive actions: Start with small steps like saving, budgeting, or investing. When you start to see little bits of progress here and there, it will build momentum to keep growing your wealth.
- Focus on opportunities: Shift your focus from obstacles to opportunities. Look for new ways to increase your income or grow your wealth.
- Embrace generosity: Practice giving, whether it’s time, money, or resources. Giving helps reinforce the idea that there’s more than enough to go around and the more you give, the more you’ll get.
- Invest in personal development: Spend time and money improving your skills, mindset, and abilities. That’s going to increase your earning potential.
- Let go of scarcity thinking: When you catch yourself worrying about not having enough, consciously choose to let that thought go. Stop talking about being poor. Stop saying that you can’t afford something. Instead, say, HOW can I afford it? Or I choose not to buy that right now because it’s not a priority.
- Stop comparing yourself to others: Focus on your own financial journey without comparing it to other people’s success.
- Change your environment: This goes along with “acting as if” that we talked about in number 4. You’ll want to create a positive and uplifting physical space that reflects abundance. Declutter or redecorate your home in the way you feel a wealthy person would. I’m not saying you need to spend a ton of money. Use what you have and just style it in a fresh, new way.
- Find mentors or role models: Look for people who have achieved financial success and learn from their habits and mindsets. Read books about wealthy people, or study them on social media to learn how they achieved financial success.
- Challenge your comfort zone: Be willing to take risks and try new things that could increase your financial opportunities. You have to be open to receive.
- Reward yourself for effort, not just results: Focus on the actions you’re taking, not just the outcomes. This will help keep you motivated. Also, remember your why. Why do you want to increase your wealth? Keep this in the back of your mind always.
- Practice mindfulness: Use mindfulness techniques to stay present and keep your thoughts focused on abundance.
- Believe you are worthy of abundance: Build your self-worth by acknowledging that you deserve financial success and abundance just as much as anyone else.
Using these strategies will shift your mindset and help you attract more abundance and wealth! Let me know which ones work best for you!
